Hello there!
My name is Patrick Dawson and I am a Lighting Designer and AV Technician currently based in Long Island
I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in 2017 with a BFA. My formal training was in theatre but my concentration was primarily in lighting design and technical production. I am always interested in new opportunities that will allow me to apply some of the practices I have learned during my formal education.
Most of my previous experience has been in theatrical production and live performance. However, I did spend the summers of 2015 & 2016 working for SEE Factor in NYC. That time provided me with a different experience in the rental/production shop. It also allowed me to become much more familiar with a wide variety of intelligent lighting equipment.
Upon graduating I took a summer residency in East Hampton, New York. There I served as the master electrician and lighting programmer for the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall. In the summers from 2017-2019 we produced several shows a week, regularly producing a few different shows in one day. The experience was enlightening and invaluable for me. The opportunity provided me with a great deal of live busking experience and many design opportunities.
Most recently, I have found my way back to the Hamptons full time. I am now serving as the Associate Technical Director for the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall. During the off-season here I serve as the sole technical staff member in the theater. During these times I am managing all production elements simultaneously at times while coordinating with renting groups or visiting crews. In the summer-season I serve a more traditional ATD role while also serving as the lighting programmer, master electrician and head of projection/video simultaneously.
I also collaborate often with the Museum and Education arms of Guild Hall on production design and support. Most recently I have lead an AV design team to remap and remount an immersive projection installation to fit the Spiga Gallery at Guild Hall. For photometric calculations and model creation I used Vectorworks CAD Software. My proficiency and experience with Vectorworks has helped to simplify, illustrate and expedite the AV design process.
During the pandemic I assisted in moving some of the GH programming online. I served as the Production Designer & Technical Director for all theatrical offerings. I also served as technical director for most of the Museum related programming online.
As I said earlier, most of my experience so far has been in theatre and live performance. But I am very interested in assisting with any projects that could use some additional little technical support! From corporate events and opera to fine art and modern dance, I am always willing to tackle any project head on. I will be prepared with creative and cost effective solutions to help achieve your vision!
Hope to work with you soon!
